In the past it has been Donald O'Conner's quips, his make 'em laugh dance along with that fabulous flip, the shock of hearing Lina's voice for the first time, the cab ride with Debbie Reynolds, moses supposes and this time the wonderful vaudeville displayed roots where many got their starts such as Jack Benny,Bob Hope, George Burns, Ed Wynn and so many others.
There is the irony and the jokes eat that in so much.
“there has been nothing between us, just air”
“oh Donnie, you don’t mean that.”
“I got no…..but I got, what do I got? I gotta get outta here”
“Call me a cab” “okay you’re a cab”
“what can I do to you if I’m only a shadow?”
“hey joe, bring me a tarantula”
So many painstaking things were done to make sure this film was done right and in the end they did have a classic. They did their research about the era in every way, they effectively went back in time with enough modern era to make sure the film was grounded for everyone. The costumes, the set, the music, the dances-were masterfully performed. Who could forget our Gene Kelly did that famous dance with such a high degree temperature? 104?
Also the irony of this being a story about Lina having to replace her voice because her voice is bad. The song that shows her being replaced by Debbie Reynolds singing is replaced. Oh the funny twists!
So NOW, today we will watch Anchors Aweigh. August 4. I may snuggle up with a bowl of soup and popcorn. I am not feeling that well but with Gene I can forget that sometimes.
Ask yourself, what costume do you like best in all these movies?
