Interesting points
When I first saw the opening number "we hate to leave" I was like "oh another boy sailor movie" then I was pleasantly surprised by the lyrics "no more pin up gals that we so enjoy" "tonight we're spending it with the real mcoy." Brilliant
Then looking at Frank Sinatra it is hard to believe that Frankie boy had such an innocent look on his face. I was born in the 90s so all I ever heard of Frank was a voice that was worn down by too many cigars and brandy. I saw a crude looking and too my innocent young eyes- a very snakey man (probably due to the mob-just a joke!!!!!!!!) But looking at him here where he is under Gene's apprenticeship-it is no wonder the women swooned. He sang the right songs, had a innocent appeal (I mean sure the man handling appeal is fine too but- knowing that you are safe with a guy first and that he'll treat you right before you get to that other stuff), and he could dance. He had it all. Blue eyes and the whole look. Everything.
Now this is one of my favorite Gene Kelly moments-He is known as the "sea wolf" and it is so darn sexy. He talks about Lola lustfully. He talks to her on the phone with his eyes shifty and smooth at the same time and his voice is dripping with sex appeal. It is the Gene Kelly moment I consider the most sexy (but that's only my opinion but I've heard others agree).

(not it but look at how he touches that phone!)
Also that 20 pianos playing? Amazing. Iturbi is amazing! He is a Spanish gem that too sadly has been forgotten by Americans and Spaniards alike.
Then there is that song with Frank singing "what makes the sun rise?" and it is all charming-the talk is cute.
The dance with Jerry the mouse is amazing. It was one of the very first times a cartoon and live people interacted. MGM did it first-then Disney. They finished the number and found they forgot to put the shadow of Jerry the mouse (well since he isn't real-they kind of forgot to put that in-I can see that-Gene is real-no need for it) but they fixed it. The premise for the little story is cute too.
Question: Who is your favorite Gene Kelly character?
Me: I kinda like Joe Brady-how about you?
August 5-The Pirate.
It's a bit cheesy and poorly made but it is a critical. We'll discuss it later.
