No words through the movie, only expressions through pantomime and dance. These are skills that have been lost. One of the reasons I love Gene Kelly so much, is I can tell which dances he choreographs because they are a sketch of stories interweaving. Many dances are just showy, like Fred Astaire but Gene has a reason for his. It may be to express his active desire for a lady, to woo her, to just blow off some steam, to argue with his inner self, or to just show some charisma. I feel Fred Astaire misses the mark in this respect.
Then there is the smoking scene...gosh I do not like smoking and the stuff it brings. As of late though, I have seen some advantages to smoking and a smoking romanticized culture. This culture has been lost though, so the appeal to smoke in the here and now is no more. To write a scene in a book or historic play would be nice though.
