Happy 100th Birthday Gene Kelly!

Everyone calls me a fan girl.
They say I'm crazy. I believe Gene Kelly is alive. He is so alive in my heart. When I look into his eyes. There is an immortal quality to it. That shine never dies. It lives on somewhere. Legacies really do count.
He inspires. Look at Singin' in the Rain. That movie was made in a dream factory. Really. Look at it, the production, the advertisement, and all of its grandeur.
I love him and Kathryn Grayson, and Judy Garland. The Pirate is amazing in its offbeat ways, Anchors Aweigh is a stereotypical film but done so eloquently with the songs and dances. Brigadoon has that lovely love story. Kelly is on top of his game.
There are so many reasons why I love Gene. His good looks, his rugged good looks, his smile, his eyes, and how when he becomes a bad guy he is a sweet guy and ultra sexy. How he promotes dancing as a real sport including all kinds of movements from sports and even housework. Ordinary objects become amazing. Unlike Astaire with the grace, he has a more sporty approach and I would rather have that in my book of sexy than a stuffed tie which Astaire sometimes was cast. I love Astaire too. They worked beautifully. Gene did great with kids. You can never be angry at him. He had a good heart and ran his own studio. He always was making the human body a beautiful story. He portrayed stories in almost everything. Everything was a ballet even if it was jazz or tap. He respected girls' bodies. Instead of making it a lustful story, he made it what it was for the story and to bring out the best aspects. That is why Cyd Charrise was so good with him. He used props such as the cloth and other aspects like spinning the camera to achieve the best possible angles to show a real women.
I could go on forever about the various aspects of Gene Kelly but here...

Covergirl

Again, not a favorite but it definitely is an important movie for him. It put him on the major map. Not only did he star with Rita Hayworth (something Fred Astaire did as well), he was part of a new technology where the studios could now put double of someone.
FACE PALM moment.

Unfortunately I lost my internet connection and the movie would not let me play all the way through. I have seen it before though.

On the Town

Not one of my favorites..However it still has it's merits.

The jokes are funny and I like the song main street. I have not decided if I want to watch it tonight. A marathon of Kelly has gotten me worn out. I am starting to love Fred more, not more than Kelly but in different respects. Gene has given me so much and will continue to help me.

Invitation to the Dance excerpts

No words through the movie, only expressions through pantomime and dance. These are skills that have been lost. One of the reasons I love Gene Kelly so much, is I can tell which dances he choreographs because they are a sketch of stories interweaving. Many dances are just showy, like Fred Astaire but Gene has a reason for his. It may be to express his active desire for a lady, to woo her, to just blow off some steam, to argue with his inner self, or to just show some charisma. I feel Fred Astaire misses the mark in this respect.

Then there is the smoking scene...gosh I do not like smoking and the stuff it brings. As of late though, I have seen some advantages to smoking and a smoking romanticized culture. This culture has been lost though, so the appeal to smoke in the here and now is no more. To write a scene in a book or historic play would be nice though.

Random Gene clips

The song you have to see is Babbitt and the Bromide, the only song Gene and Fred did together for the screen. It is the fourth one down.

Freestyle Gene Kelly!

A youtube series that I made for a tribute for these two. The idea came from a poster design that you can see at my sister blog www.alloftheclassics.blogspots.com
These two should have made a movie together.

So hey! Guess what? I also made an epic music video of him having "moves like jagger"

Who looks hot in pink? Gene Kelly

When he looks into her eyes there is that perfect "meet cute", you see the instant arousing attraction.
In this movie I have a few things I like

  • I like the singing in French
  • How all of them have their own romances
  • How each lover is right in front of them so to speak, just a few minutes off
  • The outfits are terribly pastel and it is epic
  • The dance with Gene and his girl
  • The sailor's songs
  • The song where
This is not his greatest work but you cannot miss his trademark of good dancing. He makes it look easy and extremely athletic, as always. It is not a movie he is known for and does not have any dances that are well known, however you can find it just about anywhere. Youtube, Vudu, and netflix.
This is my favorite dance in this movie and is up for the running of my favorite dance of his of all time. Some of the others include Almost like Being in Love, Singin' in the Rain, the dance with Mitzi Gaynor in Les Girls.
